Special Needs & Inclusive Education

Disability is an important medical, educational and socio-economical issue worldwide. According to WHO statistics 10% of population suffer from one or other disability. Some people suffer from multiple disabilities. UNICEF and UNESCO figures for developing countries are around 15-17%. When we study the situation of disability at city of Lahore and Pakistan the situation seem to be alarming. The most vulnerable population is the children of school going age i.e. 4-15 year of age (about 30%)

WHO Worldwide Figure of PWDs = 10% of Population

(UNICEF & UNESCO Figure up to 17%)

Total Population Lahore 70 lacs(7 million) Pakistan 17 crores (170 million)
Ratio of children of school going age (4-15 years),
30 % of total population
21 lacs (2.1 million) 51 lacs (5.1 million)
Persons With Disabilities: 10% of total population 7 lacs (0.7 million) 51 lacs (5.1 million)
Children of school going age with disabilities: 2.1 lacs (0.21 million) 51 lacs (5.1 million)

Less than 4% children with disabilities are attending special schools and 96% have no schooling due to non-availability of the facilities.

It’s therefore vital that the rights of these people be realized which is a collective responsibility of the society to uphold their political, social and economic rights.

Rising Sun presents a dynamic example of women economic empowerment by appointing 95% of female teaching and vocational training staff, psychologist and sports, music and Arts teachers.
